What It Means to be a Light

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

Matthew 5:14-16

What does it mean to be a light of the world? That has been a question rotating in my mind for a long time. Of course, I knew that it meant I needed to be a good example and that would lead others to Christ, but I didn’t know how or why.

That was until it dawned on me that when people see a light they look to its source. And that blew my mind. How had I not thought of that before? When we see light outside, we automatically look to the sun. And when it is considered spiritually, the Son.

And what importance does it make to be a light of the world? How will that affect someone’s life? Striving to be righteous is noticed, because striving to be righteous goes against the grain of the world. And whenever someone goes in the opposite direction of culture, it goes noticed. People might shame you, or not know what to do with you, but the important thing is to continue to do as Jesus called us to do: be a light and then do the great commission (which is spreading the gospel and making disciples of all nations).

Though this is short, I just wanted to share with you this revelation I gained this last week. I love it whenever the Lord opens my eyes to something I didn’t understand before. How about you? What has God revealed to you lately?
